Costa Rica Crime... is out of control when the police start ....Robbing you on the street, that’s what happen to me in June of 2006 as a American tourist in a motorcycle cops traffic stop at 2:00 am while returning home from a sat. night in the downtown metro in the shadows of the COSTA RICAN SUPREME COURT HOUSE right in front of the TICO TIMES OFFICES. The CURRENT 2006 general crime and violent crime has sky rocketed here as more and more well funded America tourist have descended on Costa Rica for vacations, real estate purchases and other investments over the past 5 years. As those Americans spend their money the Costa Rican public ends up with more money and property for the thief’s to steal as well and crimes against them are even worst and more violent than on the tourist. Some of the criminals that want to get their share of the gold are policemen. Almost every Tico (man) and especially the Tica’s (women) have been a victim of criminal’s or had a close call in the past 5 years.
Now it is simply NOT SAFE IN COSTA RICA any more. SO WHEN THEY SAY ITS NO WORST THAN IN THE USA ....DO NOT BELIEVE IT.....it is much , MUCH WORST...!
The best businesses to start up in Costa Rica is Security locks, alarms, burglar bars, concertina and barb wire erectors as these services and products are top sellers and in very high demand. Armed guards with pump shot guns is also big business at all large shopping areas and super markets and the banks have so many with airport type scanners to get in the banks front door. I personally have not seen so much armed security since Vietnam, its actually shocking to find the POLICE HAVE NOW JOINED THE CRIMIALS HERE.
IT IS REALLY SAD TO SEE.... The homes and business are simply covered over with so much security devices of wire and bars that the citizens here are living in jails while the criminals are roaming free on the streets just like it was 30 years ago in Vietnam , but there was a real war going on there then.
So even though the Costa Rican Armed Froces was ban in 1948 Costa Rica is really in a state of war with their crime wave . But seems to simply disregard it and they certainly do not talk about a war on their crime. The justice system has long been poorly managed in all of latin America. But in Costa Rica with few jails and their system of justice is so liberal they let even the harden criminals out so fast the police see no reason to dirty their hands arresting them.
Auto related theft and accidents are off the charts and no one but no one parks their auto's in front their home over nite on the street they must be in a locked garage. Even in the day time all cars any where are parked only where there is parking security guards present you must pay to watch your car or it will not be there or damaged by break in when you get back.
This gives the Costa Rica Police a lot more time to figure out the best methods to actually rob the poeple whom have the money and USA tourist are high on their list, believe it or not. This liberal justice system the Costa Ricans are so proud of allows for the perfect haven for all criminals from all the surrounding latino countries as well as it provides for low court time, no jail time, police that will not arrest them and now the streets belong to the crimials 24 hours a day and now some of the policemen have joined them.
WHEN YOU DO CALL THE POLICE YOU WILL NEED TO GET SOME PAPER AND PEN FOR THEM TO WRITE DOWN THE CRIME REPORT AS THEY NOT ONLY NOT HAVE NO FORMS THEY MAY NOT EVEN HAVE PEN AND PAPER....BUT A NAPKIN WILL DO AND MANY CRIME REPORTS ARE FILED OUT ON THEM.... ITS NO PROBLEM AS I AM SURE THEY NEVER TURN THEM IN AWAY.
SO TOURIST HERE ARE EASY TARGETS BECAUSE THEY ARE IN CR FOR ONLY A SHORT TIME AND DO NOT TO SPEND THEIR VACATION FILING POLICE REPORTS FOR CRIMES THE POLICE AND THE COURTS WILL DO NOTHING ABOUT ANY THING ABOUT ANY WAY.... TRUST ME IT IS A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME TO FILE A CRIMIAL REPORT AS IN MOST CASES THEY DO NOT EVEN HAVE A CRIME REPORT FORM ......AND WILL USUALLY ASK YOU FOR A PEICE OF PAPER TO START THE CLAIM REPORT ON....!
This also leads to very low crime statistics that the goverment officials take great pride in and falsely report in their offical statements and tourist guides.
DURING THEIR LAST ELECTION NOT ONE PARTY NOR CANIDATE RAN OR EVEN MENTIONED THEIR ESCALATING CRIME PROBLEMS INCLUDING ..OSCAR ARIAS.
